Master the Principles of Bone and Joint Infection Management

The Bone & Joint Infection Academy (BJIA) is an international educational platform dedicated to advancing the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal infections through interactive, case-based, and hands-on training.

Designed for orthopaedic surgeons and infectious diseases (ID) physicians with a special interest in bone and joint infections, the Academy combines the latest scientific evidence with practical surgical and medical education delivered by an internationally renowned multidisciplinary faculty.

The Academy consists of two complementary hands-on modules.

Module 1 – Fracture-Related Infection (FRI)

Launching in June 2027

This intensive two-day course provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis and multidisciplinary management of fracture-related infections (FRI), from the initial assessment to definitive reconstruction and long-term follow-up.

Participants will learn how to:

• Prevent FRIs in complex fractures
• Apply the latest diagnostic principles for FRIs
• Develop individualized treatment strategies
• Plan bone and soft tissue reconstruction
• Optimize local and systemic antimicrobial therapy
• Manage complex cases within a multidisciplinary team

Hands-on Surgical Workshops

Orthopaedic surgeons will gain practical experience in small-group workshops covering:

• Implant retention and exchange strategies
• Bone defect reconstruction
• Local antibiotic carriers
• Bone grafting techniques
• Arthrodesis
• Distal femur replacement
• Deformity correction
• Case-based surgical decision making

Interactive ID Workshops

In parallel, ID physicians will participate in dedicated small-group workshops focusing on:

• Advanced microbiological and histopathological diagnosis
• Principles of systemic antimicrobial therapy
• Intravenous-to-oral treatment strategies
• Therapeutic drug monitoring
• Management of antimicrobial adverse events and drug interactions
• Long-term follow-up and recognition of treatment failure or recurrence

Throughout the course, orthopaedic surgeons and ID physicians will come together in multidisciplinary case discussions to develop integrated diagnostic and treatment strategies for complex patients.

Module 2 – Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI)

The second module focuses on the diagnosis and multidisciplinary management of prosthetic joint infections of the hip and knee, including:

• Modern PJI diagnostics
• DAIR
• One-stage revision
• Two-stage revision
• Spacer techniques
• Reconstruction of complex bone loss
• Local and systemic antimicrobial treatment
• Long-term follow-up and outcome assessment
